Welcome back to school!

So, Eighth Graders, you have accomplished your mission of finding this page. Let everyone know you are here by posting: What is your favorite kind of reading material and why do you like it?

  1. My favorite kind of writing material is fiction. I really like fiction because the author of the book, always brings up plot twists that are very interesting, but they aren't real. I really like reading about things that could happen in the world of books, but can't happen in the world of reality.

  2. It was when I read Ellen Renner’s (a prestigious author) Castle of Shadows when I took notice of my deep interest in realistic fictional novels. Rustling through the pages of her very first piece, I struggled to keep up with the dexterously woven tale. Chapter after chapter, I savored the realism in the her adventurous work and enjoyed being lost in a world that easily could have existed. In the end, I find that realistic fictional books are like stepping stones for middle schoolers such as myself to lean towards pure nonfiction that would be the main focus of our literary journey as we grow older.

  3. After I read many scary fiction books such as Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn, I realized that those may be one of my favorite kinds of books. I really like Scary fiction books, comedy books, and books that have mysteries in it. I like to have that suspense feeling when I read scary books. I also like to read those frightening books at night, because it make me feel more scared.

  5. I discovered my immense obsession with Young Adult reading material when I read the engrossing Legend trilogy by Marie Lu. It was a series that literally kept me up all night, had me laughing, and brought me to tears multiple times. Reading all three books left me
wanting for more. I then ventured off reading dystopian, sci-fi, contemporary literature and fantasy. Dystopian books gets me thinking about our government and ways of living, and comparing to the one in the book. Sci-if and fantasy pieces are just fun to read, and contemporary books makes me analyze the way other people view life and how the way they would react if in a certain situation is different to how I would. Though i prefer to read books of these genres, I appreciate books of all kind and would cherish reading them. Also, I am currently reading The Farm by Emily McKay, and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger.

    2. I agree! You know the old saying: "One man's trash, is another man's treasure". If one man looks at the world and says it's a boring old flat blue circle, another man might look at it and say that it's a large 3D circle with white, green ,and blue that spins around the sun and is th only planet on which there is life.

  6. Ever since I've read the whole series of Harry Potter in fifth grade, I have loved fictional books. I think that fictional books are much more interesting than that of non-fictional books because it isn't the usual boring world that we live in; it's an exciting fantasy world that no one would ever dream of (except the authors). I would also like to read informational pieces, although I think fantasy would be much more interesting to read.

  7. John green once said,” I know that books seem like the ultimate thing that’s made by one person, but that’s not true. Every reading of a book is a collaboration between the reader and the writer who are making the story up together.” Books are my outlet whether I am happy, stressed or just exhausted, and they allow me to delve into a world that would otherwise cease to exist without my overactive imagination. I have a very eclectic taste in books. Some of my favorite literary genres are contemporary, Young Adult fiction, and dystopian/science fiction. Although I read many books I love to delve into any kind of fictional writing, whether it’s Cinderella finding her prince Charming, Theodore Finch and Violet wandering in the state of Indiana or d’Artagnan and the three Musketeers battling their foes in The Three Musketeers.
I love to pick up a book and get engrossed in it no matter the genre. One of the first fictional young adult books that I fell in love with was the Juliette chronicles (AKA shatter me series). I was completely absorbed by all the characters and Tahereh Mafi’s writing style, which I have yet to come across. In the trilogy, the main character, Juliette Ferrars has a lethal touch and is locked up in an asylum. Her parents detest her and never accepted her as their own. While being locked up in the asylum she meets Warner, the 19 year old leader of Sector 45, who she first sees as a cruel leader, but later sees through his masquerade and falls in love with. Some of my favorite authors are Kiera Cass, Cynthia Hand, Jennifer Niven, Kasie West, Rainbow Rowell and Sabaa Tahir (Which are just some of a long, long list of authors). Reading is one of my guilty pleasures. If it was a subject in school I would probably ace it, but sadly it’s not. I love to get lost in my book and through doing so I think I see the world differently, through the best possible light.

    2. I completely agree with you Khala Kim! I like writing about this character that I like whose name is Jared Jackson(JJ for short) Anyhow, he uses modern weapons and his friends to fight villians and save the world. I often dream about meeting him in the real world but unfortunately, whenever I wake up I realize that it was just a dream all along!

  8. I like dystopian novels because they're well written, and portray people we can relate to. I get captivated by the terrible things characters face, and by how some react bravely while others are cowardly. I also like this genre, because it teaches that no matter how dark the situation becomes, there will always be one thing among the darkness that will save them. And all they need to do is search for that glimmer of light. Although a whole situation in a dystopian novel is unlikely, it still sparks a fear that keeps me turning the pages.

  9. One writing material that I deeply admire is adult fiction.I started reading adult fiction last year by overhearing my pears interest in adult fiction books such as the selection series. So from hearing positive feedback from my pupils, that encouraged me to check-out and read this novel. Over the course of the book it made me so attached that summer that you will always see me holding that book in my hand like a phone! I am so devoted to adult fiction because it is awlays leaving me hungry for more pages to read.sometimes on the weekend I would just devote myself to an adult fiction book all day and just sit or lay down in my room and read. Another reason that I love adult fiction books is that it makes me feel good inside especially when you finish the book. I feel proud of
Myself whenever I finish a thick novel and I also find myself reflecting on what I just read leaving me felling good deep down inside.

  10. “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once.”
My favorite reading materials are books and my favorite genres are Fiction and Dystopian. When we were small our parents read to us stories about heroes and knights in shining armor, who beat all evil that they faced, and it taught us that all obstacles can be beaten. Books but especially fictional writing in my opinion cannot be written with just ideas, but rather with feelings, because a book aren’t well written unless it has emotions we can all relate to.
“The best places I have been to are in books.” - Ebimoboere Boleigha
To read a book is like to live in a different world. I think that’s one reason why I love to read. If you can amerce yourself in a well written book it’s as if you visited another land. Some of my Favorite authors include: John Green, Kierra Cass, J.K Rowling, Tahereh Mafi, Marie Lu, Rick Riordan, Saba Tahir, and James Dashner and many more. With each author they each bring something new to the table.
When I first read The Selection Series I immediately fell in love with it. Kierra Cass brings life to her books and emotion in her writing. Her books exemplifies in my opinion, what a book strives to be. When I first picked up the book I thought it was going to be a sappy romance novel. But it was so much more than that, the characters she created are so real and the world that she created through her writing seems so real.
Doctor who once said “books are our greatest weapons,” either with the words they speak or of the characters they portray. It doesn’t matter what you read, of characters with extraordinary powers or of the girl on fire, as long as you read you will have an imagination outlet.

  11. After reading novel, Between Shades of Gray, and the Diary of Anne Frank,my passion for historical fiction grew. Combining my love for history and E.L.A, fictional books written about the past place me in a war, concentration camp, or secret living quarters. Stories of the past help me better my knowledge of previous times and people. Historical fiction also portrays the culture of earlier and harsher life.

  12. I deeply enjoy reading books, it is like an escape from life and takes me to another world. I specifically prefer reading historical fiction and adventure/survival books.
I have always wondered how it would be to live in the wild, surrounded by various animals and scenic landscapes stretching to the horizon. This thought led me to a liking of historical fiction such as books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and The American Girl series. Reading books by Laura Ingalls Wilder showed me a picture of how life was in early America, the life I would have loved to live and experience. The American Girl series showed me the same but in different time periods, from the time of Native Americans to the early 1800’s. These books showed me what life would have been to a girl in that time period.
I am also absorbed into books to do with survival in the wild and adventure. One specific series would be Warriors by Erin Hunter. These books are about 4 large groups of cats living in the forest and having to catch food for their “clan” and preserve their own territory. This action-filled series is currently my favorite series because of the expense and excitement it gives me. I also compliment the author’s high level of description that gives me a vivid visual of what I am reading.

  13. Although I have read several different genres of books, I find fiction books enormously interesting. The Giver, Harry Potter series, and Wonder are some of my all-time favorites. One reason I like these type of books is because fiction is a form of escapism. Readers get a chance to imagine or visualize what the author is talking about in their own minds. George RR Martin once said, "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once."

  14. Reading the Divergent Trilogy made me realize my enthusiasm for dystopian fiction. The Divergent series tells a heartbreaking story about a girl who receives a tragic ending, despite her numerous sacrifices for her loved ones and her displaying valor against all odds. The reason for my growing passion of dystopian novels is because they take me to another world where the conditions for living are extremely diverse from the conditions I have lived in my whole life. I like to think about how life would be if I was the main character in a dystopian novel, and If I would be able to make the same courageous choices for my life's betterment as the characters in the book did to change their brutal living conditions. I find Agatha Christie's mystery books captivating as well, for every page I turn, it has a new puzzle piece that helps me get one step closer to solving the masterpiece. The mystery genre exhilarates me, as I get closer to finishing the book, I get to see different sides of people as well as their contrasted views. Seeing character's diverse perspective of things sometimes changes my views too. Mystery books challenges me to think ahead and to focus on little things in order to solve the mystery myself before the character in the book does itself.

  21. I am a person who really does not have a genre that interests me. At the library I pick every type of book. As long as it interests me, I read it. I usually prefer books that involve a person who is facing everyday problems and other who are facing bizarre situations. When I read a story similar to one like that, it makes me wonder...what would I do and how would I feel if I was facing the same problems as the character.I also like books with interesting twists, an example is Harry Potter. It has very weird moments such as when a wanted prisoner is his godfather! But my favorite type of book is the ones that take me to a different world or a different place because sometimes I feel I explored my neighborhood to an extent where I want to explore somewhere new. Books do exactly that. (I mean I can't buy a plane ticket everyday). At the end of the day, I learned something new, I met a new person, went to a new place, learned about an unknown author, and have a new perspective at what I do everyday.

  23. My favorite book genre to read is fiction novels like Divergent, Hunger Games, and The Giver. These kinds of books have fictional situations that are not what happens to people in the real world, but is seemingly realistic, so I'd like to think about what might happen if I was in that situation. Put myself into their shoes instead of mine, see things in a different perspective. I enjoy reading the types of books with an alternative world so I can escape from reality. That's what makes reading amazing. You can just forget about everything and just enjoy the story.
